Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about window tinting with ThrowinShade
Utah law regulates how dark your window tint can be, measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT) percentage:
- Windshield: Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches only
- Front side windows: Must allow more than 43% of light in
- Back side windows: Any darkness is permitted
- Rear window: Any darkness is permitted
Medical exemptions are available for individuals who require darker tint due to a medical condition. We can help you choose the right shade that keeps you legal and comfortable.
Shade percentage refers to how much visible light passes through the film (VLT). Lower numbers mean darker tint:
- 5% (Limo Tint): Very dark — almost no visibility from outside. Maximum privacy and heat rejection. Popular for rear windows.
- 20%: Dark but you can still see shapes inside. Great balance of privacy and visibility. One of our most popular choices.
- 35%: Medium tint with a clean, factory-look appearance. Excellent for front side windows in states with stricter laws.
- 50%: Light tint that still blocks significant UV and heat. A subtle, OEM-style look that meets most state regulations.
- 72% (Ceramic Clear): Nearly invisible tint focused on heat and UV rejection without changing the look of your windows. Ideal for windshields and those who want protection without darkness.
We offer two premium film options:
Carbon Film:
- Blocks 99% of UV rays
- Rejects 61% of infrared (IR) heat
- Non-fading, scratch-resistant
- Great value with excellent performance
Ceramic IR Film:
- Blocks 99% of UV rays
- Rejects 88% of infrared (IR) heat — significantly cooler cabin
- Non-fading, scratch-resistant
- Superior clarity and no signal interference
- Best option for maximum heat rejection
Both films are professional-grade and built to last. Ceramic IR is the upgrade pick if heat rejection is your top priority.

Here's what a typical ThrowinShade appointment looks like:
- We come to you — we'll arrive at your home, office, or preferred location at the scheduled time
- Prep — we clean the windows thoroughly to ensure a perfect bond
- Installation — film is precision-cut and applied. Most vehicles take 1.5–3 hours depending on the number of windows
- Inspection — we walk you through the finished work and answer any questions
- Curing — tint needs 3–5 days to fully cure. Small water bubbles are normal during this period and will disappear on their own
Tips for appointment day: Park in a shaded area if possible, and avoid rolling down freshly tinted windows for at least 3 days after installation.
Yes, we offer professional tint removal services. Old, bubbling, or purple tint can be fully removed before a fresh install.
- Tint removal is available as an add-on to any new tint job
- Pricing varies depending on the number of windows and the condition of the existing film — heavily degraded or baked-on tint takes more time
- Standalone removal (without new tint) is also available — contact us for a quote
We recommend removal before applying new film to ensure the best adhesion and a flawless finish. Contact us for a removal quote.
